The Heart Behind the Writing

Dr. Erica Sirrine, PhD, LCSW, FT is a grief therapist, speaker, researcher, and writer whose work centers around loss, meaning-making, and the deeply human experience of grief. Her upcoming book, Mending the Grieving Heart: Compassionate Approaches to Support Loved Ones Through Loss, releasing in August 2026, expands on her passion for helping individuals and clinicians better understand and navigate grief with honesty, compassion, and connection.

She is also the author of Sammy’s Story, a children’s book written to help families talk about serious illness, death, and dying through the eyes of a seven-year-old girl whose father is diagnosed with cancer. Through both clinical insight and heartfelt storytelling, Erica’s writing gently reminds readers that while loss changes us, love and connection endure.

Sammy's Story

This picture book addresses various aspects of serious illness, death, and dying that adults often find challenging to discuss with their children. Sammy beautifully teaches the reader that even though her father may die, their love and memories will live on forever.
